Roy Herman Shoemaker went home to be with the Lord and to reunite with his beloved wife and the mother of his children, the late Clara Mae Moose Shoemaker, on what would have been her birthday, Tuesday, August 9.  He was 87. Born in Iredell County on December 28, 1928, he was the son of the late John Howard Shoemaker and Dora Rash Shoemaker.

Mr. Shoemaker was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving during the post WWII era. Upon return from the military, he became a self-employed carpet installer.  Other than his family, the joys of his life included fishing, car races, baseball and attending gospel music shows. He was a member of the VFW and a member of Hebron Baptist Church.

His memory will be cherished by his daughter, Barbara Waugh of Statesville; two sons, Jerry Shoemaker and Wade Shoemaker (Dawn) of Statesville; one brother, Ernest Shumaker (Blanche) of Bridgewater, VA; four grandchildren: Cary Mahaffey (Chris), Jason Shoemaker, Tara Cleary (Thomas) and Ashley Shoemaker; three great grandchildren: Deaton Mahaffey, Bentley Cleary and Kailee Shoemaker; a special friend, Bobby Harris; plus several nieces, nephews & cousins.

In addition to his parents and his first wife of 35 years, Clara, he was preceded in death by his second wife, Leora Richardson Shoemaker; a daughter, Carolyn Jean Shoemaker; a son-in-law, Marvin "Randy" Waugh; four brothers: Ruel, Howard, James and Harold Shoemaker; and three sisters: Erby Warren, Sally Templeton, and Edna Ives.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday, Aug. 12, at Hebron Baptist Church. The Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday at the church with Pastor Darren Johnson and Rev. William Wease officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors to be provided by the Iredell County Burial Detail. Memorials may be considered to Hebron Baptist Church or to Gordon Hospice House.
