Darlene "Nanny" Frances (Campbell) Childress

Darlene Frances "Nanny" Childress, 81, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter, Julie, in Statesville on Saturday, January 5, 2019, while under the care of Hospice of Iredell County. She was born in Iredell County on June 23, 1937, the daughter of the late Offie Campbell and the late Helen Elizabeth Day Campbell-Spann.

Mrs. Childress attended Union Grove School. She was the widow of the late John Robert Childress who she married in 1955. Her career was that of a homemaker for her family. She considered herself a “homegrown country girl” and loved to collect dolls and lighthouses. She particularly loved yellow flowers and most anything yellow. She was a member of Beulah Church on Union Grove Road in Hamptonville.

"Nanny" is survived by two daughters, Julie Hopkins and husband, Duwayne, and Janet Buckley and husband, Joseph, both of Statesville; two sisters, Josephine Royall of Statesville and Catherine Hardy of Yadkinville; nine grandchildren: Christy Moore, Angela Campbell, Kimberly Demarce (Brock), Joey, Amy and Sammy Buckley, Duwayne Hopkins, Jr., Clara Buckley and Eli Moore; and seven great grandchildren: Joshua Wood, Paisley Demarce, Brock Demarce, Jr., Madison and Brandon Moore, Jimmy Buckley and Helen Buckley.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by three sons, John Robert Childress, Jr., Thomas Richard “Tommy” Childress and Jamie Lee Childress; one brother, J.D. Campbell; and one sister, Loretta Bowles.

A Graveside Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday, January 11, at Beulah Church Cemetery, 143 Union Grove Road, Hamptonville, with Rev. Donald Taylor officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her late husband. There will be no public viewing.
