Thelma Coates Maness, 88, of 117 Bonnie Lane passed away at her home, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, July 6, 2017, after a lingering illness.

She was born February 11, 1929, in Greeneville, Tennessee, the seventh of nine children and daughter of the late Isaac and Blanche Coates. In the 1930’s her family moved to Weldon, North Carolina, where she would later meet and marry her husband of 55 years, Jay Campbell Maness, who predeceased her in 2005.  She was also predeceased by a son, Jay Christopher Maness, in 1995. Mrs. Maness was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and during retirement enjoyed gardening, the beach and time with her family.

She is survived by her daughters, Theresa Maness Troutman of the home and Linda Kay Maness of Charlotte, and her son, Timothy Lee Maness and his husband N. Scott Whitesell of Charlotte. Also surviving are two granddaughters and their husbands, Kelly and Darin Brown of Statesville, and Jamie and Jeremiah McMahon of Harmony and four great grandchildren: Sarah Ann Brown, 13, Emily Nicole Brown, 10, Mollie Annette McMahon, 4 and Allison Jay McMahon, 2, whose laughter and happiness were such a joy to her. She is also survived by her sister and husband, Lois and Robert Clary, and her sister-in-law, Myrtle Coates, all of Roanoke Rapids, NC, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, husband and a son, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Ralph Coates and wife, Varnell, Ray Coates and wife, Dorothy, and Billy Coates; and four sisters: Ruby Hicks and husband, Carl, Eula Tillery and husband, Harvey, Ilene Tillery and husband, George, and Opal Raynor and husband, Nelson.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Maness will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday, July 10, at Providence United Methodist Church, 1273 Old Mocksville Road, Statesville, with the Reverend Dale Ellis officiating.  Interment will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm on Sunday, July 9, at Reavis Funeral Home of Statesville and then again at a meal at the family home immediately following the service.

Memorials may be made in remembrance of Mrs. Maness to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625 (www.hoic.org).  With their care, support, love and compassion, her final journey was made easier for both her and the family.
