The United States of America, age 242, lives on this July 4, 2018, despite multiple recessions, depressions, internal and external strife and numerous wars. While none of the fifty-six original signers of the Declaration of Independence, those who pledged “their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor”, remain alive today, what they created still stands as the greatest hope for mankind among all the nations of the earth.
No nation in history has done more to help those both inside and outside its borders than has the United States of America. Since the founding of this country, generations of men and women have been willing to risk their lives, and yes, give their lives for the cause of freedom. This should swell within each American reason for great pride and even greater thanksgiving.
Admittedly, there are imperfections in our government just as there are imperfections within each and every one of its citizens. However, we have a responsibility to see that she not only survives, but also thrives. Never forget the words of wisdom many of us heard from news commentator/radio broadcaster, the late Paul Harvey: “Self-government without self-discipline cannot survive.”
So if you’re looking for an obituary this Fourth of July, you won’t find one for The United States of America because she lives on. Subsequently, as we plan to celebrate this Independence Day, consider what we have inherited and the fact that we must always remain vigilant in protecting this great legacy. God bless the USA!
