It is with sadness that we announce the unexpected death of Mary Lee Johnson, age 72, formerly of Statesville and Albemarle. She passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at Charlotte Square Assisted Living Center in Charlotte following a period of declining health.

Born Mary Lee Parham on September 2, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Walter Marvin Parham and Ida Elizabeth Freeman Parham. Her younger years were spent in and around Marlboro County, SC. Her career was that of a housewife and homemaker for her family. She enjoyed cleaning and decorating her home. She also enjoyed shopping at Goodwill and thrift stores. But her real joy was in her family and especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was known for her kindness and sweet smiles. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Albemarle.

Her memory will be cherished by her four sons: Walter Scott Byrd (Judy) of Statesville, Robert Lee Byrd of Nashville, NC, John Henry Locklear of Bennettsville, SC, and Lonzie L. Locklear, Sr., of Hiddenite, NC; one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Leatherman of Maiden, NC; four sisters, Linda Clark of Laurel Hill, NC, Evelyn Haire (James), Caroline Miller and Betty Fay Rossoe, all of Bennettsville, SC; and her husband, David Elsworth Johnson of Matthews. Also surviving are three of her grandchildren who she raised as her own after their mother died: Tera Lynn Lasher, Ann Marie Mathis and James Kevin Byrd. Other grandchildren surviving are: Lonzie Locklear, Jr., Megan Leann Locklear, Joanna Renee Byrd, Crystal Nicole Davis, Danny James Byrd, Jennifer Lynn Byrd, John Henry Locklear, Jr., Tyler and Cody Byrd, Jennifer Walker, Julie Wellman and Joshua Rash. Many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive and will have fond memories of Mary Lee.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Walter Byrd; two daughters, Katrina Renae Byrd and Jennifer Byrd; siblings Joann Barfield, Francine Parham, William, Larry and Wiley Parham; and a  grandchild, Brandon Byrd.  

To celebrate her life and memory, a memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 27, at Reavis Funeral Home of Statesville.
