Betty Ruth Payne Whitlock, 83, died unexpectedly Sunday, September 17, 2017, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Ashe County, born January 22, 1934, the daughter of the late Millard Hamilton Payne and Fannie Friesland Payne.
She grew up in Ashe County and attended Fleetwood High School. Most of her adult life, however, was spent in Iredell County. She worked in the textile industry for many years prior to retirement.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James William Whitlock, Sr. who died January 3, 2013; by one brother, Rex Payne; by a sister, Othel Miller; and by a stillborn son.
Those remaining to cherish her memory are two daughters, Kimberly Baldwin and Wilma Elmore, and one son, James William “Bill” Whitlock, Jr. and wife, Connie, all of Statesville; seven grandchildren: Ray Elmore, Cathy Lamberth, Stacey Whitlock, Joshua Whitlock, Courtney Whitlock, Elizabeth Baldwin and Thomas K. Baldwin; plus seven great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Mrs. Whitlock will be laid to rest at 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 20, at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville. Rev. Otis Johnson will render the committal rites.
